3:45PM - Malabar Abandoned WWII Coastal Defence Site: Part 2
We proceeded by foot down the former railway line and
stumbled upon a family of four who were also just 'looking
around', they followed us until we reached a tunnel where they
asked us in amazement "Are you going in there?!", we replied,
"Well, yeah", they muttered amongst themselves and I heard "I
guess they haven't heard the stories". At this point I became
even more curious as to what was in the tunnel, they explained
to us that these were old POW prisons for the Japanese and that
they were supposedly haunted. Even though at the time we didn't
know their stories were nothing more than urban myth we decided
to head on in anyways, they reluctantly followed us but soon
backed out and went elsewhere.
Upon entering
the tunnel we were presented with two routes, we took the
right-hand side one, as we progressed deeper and deeper into the
tunnel I was glad I brought my trusty torch along as it became
nearly pitch black. We walked past numerous rooms to reach the
end of the hallway where we found stairs going up into the light
and stairs going further down. Naturally we decided to head
further down and we soon found ourselves surrounded by bats! We
could hear them flying everywhere and whooshing overhead, Kim
reassured me they wouldn't bump into us but still I couldn't
control my reflexes and kept flinching when a bat flew over
right next to me.
Most of these
images have been taken with flash (ugh, I know :P), although I
wanted to capture how the place looked naturally, with only
being able to use a maximum of a one second exposure, my
non-flash shots turned out pitch black so keep in mind it was a
lot more scarier, darker and mysterious than these pictures
show. :)

Having had our
fun with the bats we decided to head up the stairs and see where
it would lead us and we found ourselves at what seemed to be a
former mount for some sort of weapon or cannon. We headed back
in and walked back to the start of the other hallway, with my
camera I took some shots down the hallway and towards the door,
I also noticed that the train track went down this route. As you
can see my camera is really bad with low light situations, I had
to use a torch to get shot, the best my camera can do is 1
second at ISO400. :(

With some photos saved to the memory stick, we
proceeded down the hallway to the end to find an identical setup
to the other tunnel, however, flipped around horizontally. Once
again we ventured up the stairs but this time we found ourselves
a nice view of Sydney and the bay. :)

After that we ventured out of the tunnel and
soon spotted what seemed to be an observation building,
naturally, we had to go in and investigate :). After wondering
for five or so minutes we found a way in, we arrived at the
ground floor and the stairs up were narrow steep and the side
hand guard had almost entirely rusted away making for a very
scary walk up, peering to the side we could see the multi-storey
fall. Once up to the top level we were 'treated' to panoramic
views of the coastline.
